Genesi/AudioLabs agreement F.A.Q.
|
This page answers most common questions about the ProStationAudio/MorphOS/Pegasos bundle.
|
Q:What are the terms of the agreement?
A:Genesis bought the non-exclusive
rights to bundle a modified version of ProStationAudio Titanium
with MorphOS and derived OS's on Pegasos
and derived systems.
Q:How happens ProStationAudio is available
for licensing?
A:It's a normal procedure. Same was for
AudioLab16. Specific versions were licensed to Applied Magic Inc. (SoundStage
DSP boards) and Petsoff L.P. (Delfina DSP boards). As always, the licensed
versions work only on the hardware built by the licensee.
Q:Is it a restriced version of ProStationAudio?
A:No, it's a full version, not including (for
licensing reasons) the mpega.library. Genesi
or 3rd parties may provide an mpga.library
clone and ProStationAudio will take advantage of it.
Also, this version works only on a MorphOS/Pegasos
enviroment.
Q:When will this version be ready?
A:It's ready.
Q:How is it distributed?
A:Currently Genesi includes ProStationAudio into their "SuperBundle" package, a suite of licensed commercial applications available at no charge to Pegasos customers. Into the download page, the ProStationAudio MOS download link takes you directly to the SuperBundle page at the Pegasos site.
Q:Does ProStationAudio's realtime DSP engine run in native
mode on Pegasos?
A:Yes, the time-critical realtime engine in ProStationAudio
Titanium features pure PPC code that runs
native on Pegasos. This module uses the PPC cpu at full
speed to execute self-contained proprietary algorithms. The rest of the application runs on
a virtual processor, approximately 500% faster
than a 060 cpu.
Q:Is there other hardware that can run the PPC
code (of the realtime DSP engine) native?
A:Yes, the Cyberstorm dual CPU boards. Compared
to the Pegasos, there's a little performance
penalty due to continuous cache flushing,
required by that hardware design. Also, the
Pegasos runs at an higher cpu clock (the Titanium version subject
to the agreement works on MorphOS/Pegasos only).
Q:If ProStationAudio is realtime on a 060, what
is the advantage of a faster system?
A:With a faster system you can perform more
(processing) operations at once, and have to wait less time when rendering a
finalized master.
Q:I heard ProStationAudio uses a strong copy
protection, based on a public/private key couple: will Pegasos customers need to
send/receive their keys to/from AudioLabs?
A:No. As the version subject to the deal works
only on Pegasos, and Genesi bought the rights to bundle it with every system
they build, that version doesn't include the keying system.
Q:Will ProStationAudio be available on Windows too?
| A:No, ProStationAudio is only for classic Amiga, Pegasos,
Draco. The same DSP technology developed for ProStationAudio
has been used into a pro mastering application
for Windows, developed by AudioLabs and to
be on sale soon: ValveMaster. This new product
is not multitrack, it's a finalizer for stereo
masters featuring audio-assets-management
capabilities.
These two applications target different uses
and don't overlap each other.
